What Are Air Source Heat Pumps?

Air source heat pumps provide an energy efficient alternative to heat your home and could even help reduce your energy bills.

Air source heat pumps are situated outdoors at the back or side of a building. They operate by drawing in the heat from the outdoor air which is then transported to the refrigerant.

The air is then boosted to higher temperatures during what's known as the refrigeration cycle. Heat pumps can work efficiently even when temperatures drop below zero degrees.

Air source heat pumps do require electricity to operate, but because of the heat extracted from the air is being constantly renewed it serves as much more environmentally friendly option.

  • Potentially reduce energy bills particularly if switching from electrical heating
  • Easy to install with minimal disruption
  • Cheaper than ground source heat pumps
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Long lifespan

This type of system distributes heat by utilising the wet central heating system of a property.

The refrigeration cycle happens inside the air source heat pump outside of the building. This is also where water is heated and transported to and from the building via insulated pipes.

These are suitable for radiators and underfloor heating systems which provide heat at a lower temperature over an extended period of time.

This type of system creates warm air which is distributed by fans in order to heat a building. The refrigeration process happens inside the outdoor heat pump in which hot gas is passed through a fan (attached to a wall or ceiling).

This option is not suitable if you require hot water as Air-To-Air heat pumps do not heat the water in a property. This means you will need a secondary source of heat to provide hot running water throughout your home. Heats faster than radiators and has robust conditioning of the house.

Financial Benefits and Incentives of Air Source Heat Pumps in Scotland

ASHPs can significantly lower your carbon footprint as well as your overall energy bills as it relies on a renewable energy source of heat - the air.

The amount of savings depend on what fuel you are currently using. If you are opting to replace your electrical heating system with a heat pump then your savings will be more than if you were using natural gas.

The cost of installing an air source heat pump in Scotland can range between £3000-£10,000. Factors such as the size property and energy demands impact the total investment required.

ECO4 Grant funding in Scotland

The ECO4 scheme in Scotland offers grants to homeowners and private tenants to enhance energy efficiency and reduce heating expenses. Available until March 2026, this government-funded program aims to lower energy bills and decrease carbon emissions.

Through the scheme, energy suppliers must provide grants for energy-saving measures across three categories: heating, insulation, and low-carbon technologies. These measures can include cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps.

For a household to qualify for the ECO4 grant, it must meet both of the following conditions:

Energy Rating: The property must have a low energy rating, specifically in the E to G range. This means the property's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) should indicate an energy efficiency rating within this range.

High Energy Costs: The property must have high energy costs. Ofgem typically defines high energy costs for properties that use electric heating or are off the gas grid, relying on alternative heating sources like oil or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) boilers.

In addition, a member of the household must be in receipt of one of the following means-tested benefits:
  • Working Tax Credits
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Income Support
  • Income-based ESA
  • Income-based JSA
  • Pension Savings Credit
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
  • Housing Benefit
