What is Underfloor Insulation?

Underfloor insulation involves installing insulating material between the joists or beneath the floorboards of your property. This process prevents heat from escaping through the floor, reducing drafts and increasing the overall warmth of your home.

Underfloor insulation is particularly beneficial in older homes with suspended timber floors, where heat loss is more common, but it can also be applied to newer properties to improve energy efficiency.

Benefits of Underfloor Insulation in Alloa

benefits of underfloor insulation in alloa

1. Reduce Energy Bills

Underfloor insulation helps prevent heat from escaping through your floors, reducing the need to constantly heat your home. This can lead to significant savings on your energy bills, with potential reductions of up to £110 annually, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

2. Increased Comfort

Experience a warmer and more comfortable home with fewer cold spots and less floor-level drafts. Underfloor insulation makes a noticeable difference in rooms with wooden floors or tiles, particularly in ground-floor living spaces.

3. Lower Carbon Footprint

By improving the thermal efficiency of your home, underfloor insulation reduces the energy needed to heat your space. This leads to lower carbon emissions, helping you contribute to Scotland’s goals for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

4. Extended Lifespan for Flooring

Insulating under your floors can also help reduce moisture buildup, which in turn can extend the life of your floorboards and prevent issues like dampness or mold from developing.

ECO4 Grant funding in Scotland

FREE SOLAR PANELS, HEAT PUMPS, AND INSULATION NOW AVAILABLE UNDER THE ECO4 SCHEME FOR HOMES IN SCOTLAND

With the ECO4 grant funded by your energy provider, you can enhance your home's energy efficiency at no personal cost. These grants offer free heating improvements and insulation upgrades, which help to keep heat inside your home. As a result, you use less energy to stay warm, leading to lower energy bills.

Who is eligible for ECO4?

The ECO4 scheme offers various energy efficiency measures to individuals who meet specific eligibility criteria. If you are a homeowner or a private tenant receiving qualifying benefits, you have a good chance of receiving support from energy suppliers under this scheme, which has been operational since April of last year.

Eligibility for the ECO4 scheme is determined through a check conducted by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to confirm your benefits status. In some cases, you might be required to submit a Child Benefit Award Notice or provide a self-declaration of your household income. Ensuring your income is within the set thresholds is crucial for qualification.

If you are a landlord with tenants who receive benefits, encouraging them to apply for the grant can be beneficial. Doing so can significantly enhance the energy efficiency of your property by installing free electric storage heaters or taking advantage of available insulation grants, such as free cavity wall or loft insulation.

Even if you don't receive benefits but live in a property with poor energy efficiency, there is still a possibility of qualifying through the flexible eligibility (LAFlex) program. This initiative, supported by certain councils, enables energy-efficient upgrades to your home, making it a viable option for those who need improvements without the requirement of receiving benefits.

What are the qualifying benefits?

The ECO4 fund has revised its criteria, leading to changes in the minimum benefit requirements for eligibility. These updates are in line with the carbon savings obligations that all energy suppliers must meet.

The main goal of this revision is to guarantee that individuals with low incomes or in vulnerable situations can access funding and receive support and grants for home improvements through energy efficiency installers.

Qualifying benefits include:

- Child Tax Credits
- Child Benefits
- Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Warm Home Discount Rebate
- Working Tax Credit (WTC)
- FLEX - Under £31,000 combined household income

What benefits no longer qualify?

The following benefits, previously eligible under the ECO3 criteria, are no longer included in the ECO4 energy company obligation:

- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)*
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB)*
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Severe Disablement Allowance*
- War Pensions Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

*Receiving a Disabled Facilities Grant or disability-related benefits in the past no longer guarantees qualification for ECO4. However, if you are currently on Universal Credit, you may be eligible for the scheme.

What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government initiative designed to help residents insulate their homes, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce energy costs. The scheme will be in effect until March 2026.

Under this scheme, energy suppliers are required to assist customers in lowering their heating bills by installing energy efficiency measures. In some cases, a contribution may be required from the homeowner, depending on the specific measure and any property issues.

The scheme complements the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, yet unlike ECO4's 'whole house' approach, this scheme will mostly deliver single insulation measures.

What is Covered in the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The GBIS provides a range of primary and secondary insulation measures.

Primary Measures (available to both eligibility groups):

Cavity wall insulation (including party walls)
External/internal/hybrid wall insulation
Loft insulation
Room-in-roof insulation
Pitched roof insulation
Floor insulation
Park home insulation
Solid wall insulation

Secondary Measures (available only to the low-income eligibility group):

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
Boiler programmer & room thermostat

Secondary measures are only available if a primary insulation measure has been installed in the same property under the scheme.

General Eligibility Group:

- Properties in council tax bands A-D in England

- Properties in council tax bands A-E in Scotland
